Hello! I’m Emalee.
Before giving this business a name in 2021, I worked on small regenerative organic farms in Southeast PA. While I was there to focus on vegetables, I constantly found myself distracted. Around interesting grasses & colorful weeds, I had an instinct to pull things together in an aesthetically pleasing way.
Completing two internships with florists, I gained “classic” skills and business knowledge while my personal understanding of “florals” continued to expand. The new definition would include branches, vines, nuts, fruits, berries, vegetables and other forgotten seasonal elements. I love breaking American floristry “rules” and am most inspired by Ikebana.
I see how the floral industry has lost touch with the earth and that makes not a bit of sense to me. Shipments of off-season stems from across the world, covered in pesticides and plastic sleeves, designed into throwaway vases. Low quality product that becomes more trash is the norm. Bird Seed is here for a celebration of what the natural world provides on your chosen date in this region- proudly local & low waste.
Other than learning more & more about nature, my greatest loves are my husband Will, my two black cats Pete & Zoey, our old farmhouse, and a hot cup of coffee.
